agreed. fabulous rendition. The set lists for June 76 are
so repedative (sp? dont care, too tired), but every show is
a treat if you ask me. The next night doesnt suck either
I must say. The Cassidy is exceptional imho 6-29. Fingers on a hand they are...
crazy fingers at that

I always go back to Alexandria for the most overall enjoyable performance in my "eyes"....I love the way Ned plays the lead on electric piano out of Stones and Jerry just works right into the pocket with him soo smoothly. Serious symmetry happening and Jerry just seems to bending the strings alittle differently this particular evening. This is, and has been, hands down my favorite going on at least two years now. Damn near perfect imo

EDIT : Guess I should read the title of the thread a litle closer next time....Post haitus Ill go with Englishtown. Was just checkin that one out last night.

Still tho - check out Alexandria again today. It amazes me everyt time I listen, which Im doing while I write this.

I find the 7.8.78 Red Rocks version unique. Jerry's singing is also kind of 'breathy'.
Check it out if you haven't heard it!

Love that whole show man....Shit, that whole chunk is ridiculous

Estimated Prophet-> The Other One-> Eyes Of The World-> Drums-> Wharf Rat-> Franklin's Tower-> Sugar Magnolia

Amongst the best out there imo.

The June '76 renditions of Eyes are heavenly. Though I like 6/9/76 best of all, with it's lengthy intro jam. Nearly 9 minutes of extended theme jamming prior to the first verse...

I'll always be a '77 Eyes guy first, but I know what you mean about that sweet 6/9/76 Eyes...they went "backwards", w/that 9-min. intro jam more resembling the outro jams of the '73-'74 era before they cook along w/a more traditional rendering. Good vox by Jerry too that year.

other than repeating ad nauseum that the greatest single EYES ever is 10/29/77, I'd point out 2 other fine versions from '77 that jam quite nicely in the intro and feature spectacular mid-tune exploration jamming as well:

http://archive.org/details/gd1977-05-18.sbd.miller.79012.flac16

and

http://archive.org/details/gd1977-05-15.28916.sbeok.flac16

These 2 shows often get lost in the mayhem of May '77 "super-shows" (5-7-5/9, for example), but they are killer shows in their own right and feature two distinctive and very experimental EYES worthy of consideration.

No matter what era you prefer, one thing i think we can all agree on is that EYES was one of the best, if not THE best, songs the boys ever did live, evidenced by its permanent, no-missing rotation run from debut in '73 til the end.

“The June '76 renditions of Eyes are heavenly”

They certainly are. All (11?) versions from '76 are excellent. I really love 9/28, with that Orange Tango Jam coming out of Eyes. And the TOO>Eyes>TOO from 7/17 is very nicely jammed. 6/11 is pretty heavenly too. I just love all of '76. I listen to that year more than I do '77. The majority of '77 shows just kind of blend together for me. Too repetitive I suppose.

when you are known for your covers and not your originals, you are a cover band

JGB does covers, but I think of his originals like Reuban and Cherise or Gomorrah

Stones play plenty of covers, but we think of them for Moonlight Mile or Start Me Up...

Bob Weir would have fun in a sandbox, so that doesn't mean much

Kaiser? originals? who knows, who cares? but they play a mean GSET

Lovely version, yes. But as good as some of those post-hiatus versions in '76-'77 were, they always sound frenetic to ears inured to 73-74. I like that they play with arrangements, but those later version mostly signal "cocaine" to me.

I don't find them to be frenetic. Fast, yes, but in a controlled way. There is some very tight, cohesive playing in those '76 and '77 “Eyes,” and I don't see how they are frenetic. Now some of those early '80s versions certainly are. And the cocaine use is clearly more apparent in those '80s shows

On the '80s versions, we can certainly agree. This is what those have always sounded like to me:
